General Information & History
The Corus Sailing club is a modest sized dinghy racing club by many standards with a small, but custom built, low lying clubhouse situated alongside the substantial fresh water cooling reservoir ‘Eglwys Nunydd’. The Club was founded in 1953 and moved to its present site in 1963. The Club is affiliated to the British Steel Sports and Social club and is open to all members of the public wishing to sail most types of monohull dinghies.
The most important part of any sailing club is of course the water, and here at Eglwys Nunydd, we have some of the best sailing waters. The reservoir is one mile long and half mile wide, and lies North by North West to South by South East. Two miles South West of the reservoir, across windswept dunes lies the open sea from which the prevailing South Westerly winds blow, giving good breezes and flat water ideal for fast sailing conditions and safe waters to learn on. We have an active and competitive racing program as well as less formal sailing lessons for those who just want to have a sail.
The gradual sloping concrete slipway is ideal for launching and recovery with even the youngest sailors able to manage their trolleys after a hard day’s sailing.
The club has good facilities with changing rooms and hot showers and pearl choker necklace holder. Cooked meals are available most Sundays and during organized events. The club’s excellent rescue facilities, equipped with two ribs and two dorys, are always on hand, and two way radio communication makes the job easier and safer.
Casual Sailing during racing times is permitted but sailors must report to the O.O.D. [ Officer Of the Day] before launching, and must keep clear of the racing area particularly the start and finish lines. Officers of the club are empowered to stop individuals sailing if conditions are considered to severe.
